Routine HIV Testing Resource Kit for Health Care Providers

HIV Logo

The Saskatchewan HIV Provincial Leadership Team (PLT) is pleased to share a set of resources to assist health care providers in implementing the Saskatchewan HIV Testing Policy 2013. This policy calls for routine HIV testing as the new standard of practice.

The Routine HIV Testing Resource Kit for Health Care Providers consists of:

Client Information Sheet – May be used as a means to provide clients with the information necessary for informed consent, prior to an appointment or interaction e.g. distributed by reception, or in a waiting room. The white side bar summarizes the minimum information required for consent, in simple language.

Posters – To be displayed in a range of public areas, as a means of increasing awareness and normalizing the routine testing process. The photographs included on the posters represent segments of Saskatchewan’s general population, rather than focusing on risk demographics. The intent of this approach is to convey the message that we are now encouraging routine rather than targeted testing.

Routine Testing Quick Guide – A short reference document depicting the basics of testing: Why, Who, When, How, and What to do with Results.

In-Depth HIV Pre- and Post-Test Counselling – A review of optional information related to HIV and HIV testing, to serve as a resource for health care providers when clients request additional information or need more in-depth counselling. Content in this document is neither required nor necessary in most settings which offer routine testing. Use of information in this document is at health care provider discretion and should be based on client need.

Lab Testing Flow Chart – A visual depiction of the HIV testing cascade performed automatically through the Saskatchewan Disease Control Laboratory. Also includes simple instructions for clinical follow-up. This information is supplementary in nature. Health care providers are not expected to have a detailed understanding of the content in this document and are assured that by simply ordering “HIV Screen”, the cascade will proceed automatically.

The above documents are intended to facilitate the implementation of routine testing and to minimize the time and resources needed for such implementation. The PLT wishes to thank you in advance for recognizing the significance of HIV in our province and for your commitment to provide quality, evidence-based care to your clients.

Electronic versions of these resources are available  at the Saskatchewan HIV Provincial Leadership Team website: www.skhiv.ca
