Do you know a nurse practitioner who has made a difference in the quality of health care that patients receive? Or maybe you were mentored  by a nurse pracititioner that inspired you as you began your exciting career as a nurse practitioner. We want to hear about them. Each year we honor nurse practitioners and there dedication to the profession and the clients that they serve.

Can NPs Help Reduce Emergency Department Wait Times?

Emergency wait times have long been a concern and NPs may be able to assist in reducing these times.  Four members of SANP met with Graham Fast from the Saskatchewan Health Quality Council on January 17th.  Mr. Fast is the lead on the ED Waits and Patient Flow Team from the Provincial Kaizen Operational Team.  Lia Boxall (President SANP), Maureen Klenk (President CAAPN and SANP member), Barb Warkentin (Past President SANP), and Leland Sommer (President Elect SANP) met with Mr. Fast to look at ways NPs may be able to help.

Teamwork key to nurse practitioner role

Karen Hart walks downstairs to the child care space at Nutana Collegiate to check on some of the infants and toddlers in care. She knows the names and faces of many of the 600 students and most of the children in the child care. Hart is a nurse practitioner (NP) based at Nutana Collegiate. Hart’s placement at Nutana Collegiate shows the diversity of the work environment for a NP. “Nutana is a regular high school. However, a lot of the students have had difficulty staying in school for many reasons,” she says. About 80 per cent of the students are over the age of 18. “I deal with everything from sore throats to sexually transmitted infections, birth control to mental health issues.
