Leader residents will notice an increase in health-care services in the near future. The Cypress Health Region has hired Shannon Chernoff to be a second nurse practitioner for the Leader area, although she won’t start practising in the community until October.
More patients in Ontario will have access to family health care thanks to 14 new Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics being created throughout the province.

Under the Primary Health Care (PHC) model, the Prairie North Health Region (PNHR) has utilized the role of nurse practitioners (NPs).
NPs are registered nurses (RN) with additional training and experience and education.
Nearly two years ago the opportunity arose for me to start practicing as a licensed Nurse Practitioner in Maple Creek. The idea of a NP in the rural community was met with doubt and confusion. Many times I heard,” well you are better than nothing,” or, “are you staying?”
The Canadian Nurse Practitioner Core Competency Framework (2010) has been completed and published by the CNA. Saskatchewan will now start the process of gathering feedback from stakeholders in the province to look at the new competencies and see how they will be used. Our NP competencies were published in 2004. The SRNA has also started the process of reviewing the Clinical expectations as a companion document.
